How to identify authentic Ningxia (Zhongning) goji?

 

Zhongning goji has been introduced to many provinces in China. Due to unique climate and soil condition in 'goji home', Zhongning goji berries are different from products grown in other places in quality and other properties. There are four ways you can try to tell if your goji berries were produced in Ningxia.

a. see

    berry shape: ellipse, modern cultivar is longer in shape.

    fruit navel: white

    color: red or purple red

    dried Zhongning goji water content is approximately 12%. If pressure is applied the

    berries may lump together, but with just a little shake, the lump would be loose

    again.

b. experiment

    put dried berries in cup of water, the berries would float on surface of water for a

    while.

c. taste

    Zhongning goji has thin skin and more pulp. It tastes sweet, no traces of bitterness 

    or other undesirable tastes. Berries of modern cultivar contain less seeds.

d. smell

    when opening package, Zhongning goji gives off a special sweet fragrance.
